Topic outline

  • Pathway to Progress Year 5

    Rationale

Pathway to Progress is designed to give pupils the foundations and skills to enable them to make accelerated progress and secure age-related expectations.

    • This programme works alongside the HIAS schemes of learning and would also complement a blocked unit approach.
    • It can be used alongside Diagnostic Mathematics Tasks or classroom AfL to plug gaps and maximise progress in mathematics. This will allow pupils to keep up with peers and age-related learning back in class.
    • To keep the momentum of learning, it should be delivered at least three times a week, either 1:1 or in small groups of no more than 3 pupils.

    Who is it for?

    • It is for children who are working below age-related expectations and will need additional support to secure the key skills in number and place value and the four operations so that they are able to overcome barriers to learning and make accelerated progress.
    • Children with significantly lower starting points will be able to access initial sessions in the units however they may need additional sessions to consolidate and embed learning.

    The Programme

The intervention programme is a comprehensive teaching tool with counting starters, worked examples, key questions, language focus and independent practice for each session.

    • Each session is designed to be approximately 20 - 30 minutes.
    • Whilst the programme can be used as a stand-alone programme, it is more effective if used as a tool to secure prior learning. These sessions will support pupils to embed key knowledge and support pupils when accessing age-related work in class.
    • The optimum group size is no more than 3 pupils to allow teachers the time to gain an in-depth insight into the pupils’ barriers to learning and misconceptions.
